The main objectives of setting up Special Economic Zones (SEZ) include:
- Generation of additional economic activity
- Promotion of exports of goods and services
- Promotion of investment from domestic and foreign sources
- Creation of employment opportunities
- Development of infrastructure facilities
NOTE:The Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in India were recommended by the Baba Kalyani Committee.
The Baba Kalyani Committee was formed by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to evaluate the SEZ policy of India and make recommendations for improvement.
The committee aimed to make the SEZ policy compatible with World Trade Organization (WTO) standards.
