The first Kannada Newspaper, Mangaluru Samachara was published in 1843 by Rev. Hermann Frederick Mogling (from German) of the Basel Mission.
It was published from Mangaluru.
The newspaper contained eight different aspects:
— Local News: ‘voora varthamana’
— East India Company and its laws and regulations: ‘sarakarada niroopagalu
— State News: sarva rajya varthamanagalu’
— Unusual News: ‘nuthanavada ashcharya suddigalu’ (unusual news),
— Mannerisms: ‘anyara nadathegalu’
— Good Conduct ‘subuddigalu’ (good conduct),
— moral stories and songs of Purandaradasa: ‘kathegalu'
The day on which Rev. Mögling started his paper, July 1, is celebrated as “Patrika Dina” in Karnataka.
